How Does Matched Betting Work? A Beginner's Guide
The basic idea
Matched betting uses bookmaker free bet promotions against a betting exchange to lock in profit regardless of a match's result. You place a bet at a bookmaker, the back bet, and an opposite bet on an exchange, the lay bet, so between the two, whichever way the match goes, your overall position barely moves, while the free bet promotion itself becomes real cash.
What is a qualifying bet?
A qualifying bet is a bet made with your own money to satisfy a bookmaker's promotion terms. It usually costs a small, known amount, typically under £2, once laid off.
What is a free bet token?
A free bet token is the reward: a bet where, if it wins, you keep the winnings but not the stake.
What does laying a bet mean?
Laying means placing a bet on an exchange that a specific outcome won't happen, which offsets your bookmaker bet.
Why it's not gambling in the usual sense
Because every bet is matched with an opposing exchange bet, the result of the match doesn't meaningfully affect your profit. You've removed the risk that normally makes betting a gamble. What's left is the free bet promotion's value, converted into cash through the maths, not through predicting the right result.
Worked example
This one's smaller and scrappier than a full month's tracker, six weeks, dozens of sign-up offers across bookmakers from major national names down to smaller independents. The pattern holds: qualifying bets cost pennies to a couple of pounds each, almost always negative by design. The free bets that followed did the actual work, typically £3.50-£7 on smaller £5 and £10 offers, up to £21.88 on a £30 free bet and £28.30 on a £40 one. A handful of multi-leg free bets returned nothing at all, which is the honest trade-off of that bet type: no stake at risk, but no guarantee either. Net across six weeks and every offer, win or miss: £572, built from the same mechanics every time.
How Does Matched Betting Work? A Beginner's Guide - FAQ
Is matched betting legal in the UK?
Yes. It's a legal use of publicly available bookmaker promotions and betting exchanges. No laws are being broken, and it's not the same activity as speculative gambling.
Do I need to be good at maths?
No. The Teamer Calculator works out the lay stake for you. You just need to understand the qualifying bet and free bet process well enough to place the right bets in the right order.
How much can I realistically expect to make starting out?
It depends entirely on how many sign-up offers you work through, since each bookmaker only offers a new-customer promotion once. Early results tend to be the strongest, since sign-up offers are typically worth more than ongoing reload promotions.
18+ only. New customers only. T&Cs apply. Please gamble responsibly.
Odds and offers correct at time of writing, always verify directly with the bookmaker before signing up.
